I agree that senseless killing on a mass scale (by war or companies or government) becomes so overwhelming that it is not processed in the same way as one man committing a murder (OR FOURTEEN) and that punishing the greedy individual without fixing a system based on greed is flawed but this doesn't feel like the story to end with that moral! What an incredible instrument. In 1947, no one else could or would have made a movie that looked like this, with a story that unfolds like this and ends like this. After the dark but jovial nature of the rest of the story, Verdoux casually killing people for personal benefit with a wink to the camera, suddenly his own death is a somber event for the narrative, a time for Chaplin to bemoan the flaws of capitalistic individuality.
